Canberra is the capital of our nation and its seat of federal government. Its history goes back to the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1900 when all the states agreed to unite as one country and to build a new city to become the new nation's capital. This city was named Canberra and was situated in a new territory excised from New South Wales called the Australian Capital Territory.

Because the birth of the city happened in such unique circumstances it was possible to plan the city from its inception. Mr Walter Burleigh Griffin was engaged by the Australian Government to perform this task and today Canberra is one of the few cities in the world that has the benefit of such a birth. The city was planned around a man made lake which is the major geographical feature of the city and bears the name of the cities designer to this day.
