New England

The New England District of New South Wales centres on its two major cities, Tamworth and Armidale, however the region spreads through the magnificent New England ranges and includes the towns of Tenterfield and Glen Innes to the north and out to Dorrigo and Walcha in the east. The New England is renowned for its impressive historical buildings. Early white settlement commenced around 1830 and there are vast numbers of national trust buildings located in the district. Among the best is the Wollombi gorge located 40km east of Armidale. The falls are the second highest in Australia – 220 meters. The Ebor falls are part of the Guy Fawkes River national Park and are 80 km east of Armidale along the waterfall way. Other waterfalls to be explored are in the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park which boasts 13 major waterfalls, and the Dorrigo National Park with its impressive skywalk and cascading waterfall.

In the Tamworth hinterland there are also some must see locations and attractions. A day tour to Nundle with its picturesque mountain village type atmosphere and its magnificent mountain scenery is well worth a visit. The area experiences snowfalls during the winter adding to its charm. Lake Keepit is also a terrific destination for a family picnic, and a trip to the country races is a wonderful way to experience the country culture.
