The weather in Katoomba can be significantly cooler than in Sydney, and it is worth taking extra layers of clothing if you are visiting during the winter months. Snow is common in winter, and in June, July and August Katoomba holds a Yule Fest, complete with many of the trappings of Christmas, so this is a definite must see if you are here during these times.
The climate varies with height in the Blue Mountains region! At Katoomba, the summer daytime temperatures are usually around the 20s with a few days extending into the 30s. Night time temperatures are usually sitting around the mid teens which can be a very pleasant experience. In winter the temperature is typically about 10 °C in the daytime with 0 °C or so on clear nights.
There are two to three snowfalls per year and the annual rainfall is about 48 inches with many misty days. The Upper Blue Mountains receives an average of around 1050mm per year while the Lower Blue Mountains receive around 850mm per year. Showers can be a regular occurrence all throughout the year, but never last for long! The higher that you are up the mountains the more frequent that they become.
Even though snowfall isn’t a regular occurrence, you can still see white blankets of frost covering the ground during the early hours of the morning. And then come night fall a thick layer of ice will form on your windscreen of your vehicle. These conditions make it great for cosy log fires and brisk morning walks to enjoy the winter air.
