Port Stephens remains barely untouched to this day from development, as you don’t see any signs of the bigger cities trademarks rubbing off on this seaside town. With only a few multi complexes consisting of accommodation properties for visitors, it is made up of lush tropical surroundings and crystal blue waters.

One of the biggest developments for Port Stephens is the proposal for a brand new Harbour and Marina Precinct to be built. As the existing harbour is one that was created naturally, it is a prime development site for bigger and better things. But with a lot of the locals wanting to keep the area the way it is today, they are continuing to raise their concerns with the local government. Within this new development there is going to be a 90-berth marina, an 80-room five-star resort hotel, restaurant, resort shop and conference facilities within the precinct.

Development around Port Stephens is confined essentially to the southern side of the harbour on the Tomaree Peninsula. But as Port Stephens’ soil is mostly poor and has limited agricultural potential, it is for this reason that there are no large towns around and the development of a significant port has never been possible. Today Port Stephens' economy is based on tourism, oyster-cultivation, fishing, prawning, dairying, timber getting and mixed farming.

Major development has begun in the region only recently and for the most part many of the bushlands, forests and beaches in the region they still remain unspoiled and untouched. Conservationists and many regional officials are very careful to keep the balance between nature and development.
