History & Origins

Each Sofitel in the world has a cultural link with a French city or region that shares similar characteristics in terms of landscape, culture and design. Marseille is the link between Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour and Marseille, the epitome vibrant sophistication of waterside living. Marseille’s Darling Harbour and Marseille’s industrial ports are a perfect match.

Every Sofitel property has its own unique identity. These elements are used to make the hotel stand out and to be the flagship hotel in Australia. Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour has become the benchmark. Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour has its own unique features, including a signature scent, candle-lighting ceremonies in the evening, and a welcoming drink.

Candle Ritual

Paris was the very first city in the world to light up its streets after dark with gas lamps. It had more than 56,000 of them. Paris was dubbed La Ville Lumiere or the City of Light. The Sofitel Candle Ritual pays homage to the transition from day into night.

The Art of Sabrage

The French tradition of “sabrage” – cutting open a Champagne bottle with a cavalry sword – offers guests at the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour a sensory experience that combines expertise, drama and luxury. The art of sabrage dates back to Napoleon Bonaparte’s cavalry who used a sabre as their weapon of choice.

Polishing Ritual

At the entrances to every Sofitel Hotel in the world, you will find a ‘Name Plate.’ Each morning at 7am, a concierge member will polish the nameplate. This daily polishing shows passers-by the refinement of the Sofitel and its desire to strive for perfection.
